Athlete Profile
Career: From Hydel High to International Competition
Brianna Lyston developed her sprinting career at Hydel High School in Jamaica before competing at junior international level and later representing Louisiana State University (LSU). Her progress from school championships to major international events included a World U20 title in 2022 and an NCAA indoor 60 m title in 2024.
Hydel High · Cali
Lyston emerged from Jamaica’s school sprinting system at Hydel High School. Her breakthrough on the international stage came in August 2022 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia. She won the 200 m final in 22.65 seconds with a 0.0 m/s wind reading, ahead of Jayla Jamison of the United States (22.77) and fellow Jamaican Alana Reid (22.95).
That result was a junior world title in her own right, not a school or national-team honour attributed to another athlete. It also marked a key transition from domestic junior racing to higher-profile international competition. Her next step was collegiate athletics in the United States.
NCAA · SEC
Lyston developed her sprinting program as a freshman at LSU while contributing to the Tigers’ relays. Lyston ran the third leg as LSU won the SEC 4 × 100 m title in 42.92. Later, the Tigers took third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 42.52 and Lyston earned first-team All-American honors.
LSU named Lyston the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women’s Freshman of the Year. Though her breakthrough on the individual level came the following year, the experience gained at the highest level of US collegiate sprinting was beneficial in her quest to dominate the NCAA in 2024.
LSU · Indoor
Lyston competed for LSU in the 2025 indoor track and field. She took second place in the SEC indoor 60m. and made the NCAA indoor final, earning first-team All-American honors. She ran a season’s best of 7.13 in the 60m.
According to the LSU statistics, Lyston did not compete outdoors in 2025.
