League Teams and Season Format
Teams for 2026-27 include clubs from Kingston as well as from other parishes such as St. Catherine, St. Ann and St. James. The teams listed are participants and not a listing of league positions.
Each club plays the other 13 teams in the regular season. The top six teams play-off for the title. The top two teams qualify for the semi-finals. The other four teams in the play-offs contested the quarter-finals. The bottom two teams are relegated. Typically, matches are played on Sundays and Mondays. However, these days may be changed.
Jamaica Premier League History and Competition Format
Origins · sponsors
The Jamaica national top-flight league began in the 1973-74 season with Santos winning the first title. The league has gone through format and title sponsor changes. The current title sponsor is Scotia Group Jamaica Limited and should not be confused with the English Premier League.
Governance
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is charged with running the national football system, while the Professional Football Jamaica League (PFJL) runs the national professional league. It is a national-level competition that offers clubs an opportunity to play beyond parish and regional level football.
Santos to Cavalier
The competition has been dominated by different clubs through various eras. Santos won the first five titles. Later, Kingston clubs such as Arnett Gardens, Tivoli Gardens and Harbour View became dominant. In the current era, clubs such as Cavalier and Mount Pleasant have competed against the established clubs.
Format & disruption
The format has depended on scheduling and the number of participating clubs. The competition was suspended mid-season for the 2019-2020 season due to COVID-19, and no competition was held for the 2020-2021 season. The 2021 season was also short. The 2022 and 2022-23 seasons were held consecutively.
There are 14 teams in the 2026-27 season with each team playing the other 13 teams in a round robin format (3×3). The play-off format is:
- The first- and second-placed teams in the group stage play in the semi-finals;
- The third, fourth, fifth and sixth placed teams play in quarter-finals;
- All matches are played on a home and away basis;
- The winning team is determined in a final played over a single match.
Regional qualification gives the domestic campaign another purpose. Leading Jamaican clubs can reach CONCACAF Caribbean competitions, where results may open a route to the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Continental places depend on the applicable season regulations and should be checked when final standings are confirmed.
Jamaica Premier League Past Champions
The most recently completed championships are listed in sequence. The 2019–20 campaign was abandoned and the following season was not held; the competition then resumed in 2021.

Portmore United’s record includes honours won under the Hazard United name. The club secured its eighth national championship in 2025–26, while Cavalier claimed consecutive titles in 2023–24 and 2024–25. Historical league honours are drawn from season-by-season championship records rather than inferred from finishing positions.
JPL and Caribbean Connections
The JPL is one part of the wider Caribbean club-football pathway. There have been many successful JPL sides that have represented the island in regional competitions. Their performances have shown how strong the local clubs are outside of the national football scene.
