Kimi Antonelli heads to the 2026 United States Grand Prix with his first mathematical chance to clinch the Formula One drivers’ title, according to formula1.com’s preview published on 22 October 2026. The official preview says he must win in Austin while Mercedes team-mate George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton fifth or lower.

Antonelli needs the right combination

formula1.com’s preview makes the Austin race a title opportunity built around the win and the results of Russell and Hamilton. It says this is the first weekend in which Antonelli can mathematically seal his maiden championship. A strong result by the championship leader is not enough by itself: the specified outcomes must all fall into place.

formula1.com’s official 2026 drivers’ standings list Antonelli on 340 points, Russell on 238, Hamilton on 229 and Max Verstappen on 221. SportsRivo’s calculation from formula1.com’s 2026 drivers’ standings puts Antonelli 102 points ahead of Russell: 340 − 238 = 102. The margin gives a snapshot of the contest before Austin, while the preview’s clinching conditions show what must happen in the race.

The standings also place Verstappen behind Hamilton, despite the Dutchman’s recent results. formula1.com says he won the previous two rounds, in Malaysia and Singapore, and four of his last five visits to the Circuit of The Americas. His recent form and Austin record make him relevant to the race story even though the published clinching scenario names Russell and Hamilton.

Verstappen’s form adds Austin context

formula1.com’s preview says Antonelli has remained at the top of the drivers’ standings since the Japanese Grand Prix. He now arrives at the United States Grand Prix with a specific path to his maiden title, while Verstappen brings the most recent winning streak into a venue where he has prevailed repeatedly.

The contrast is between a title leader whose opportunity depends on a precise set of results and a rival with back-to-back victories. The official preview identifies the weekend as Antonelli’s first possible clinch, not as a championship already decided. The order at the finish will determine whether that opportunity becomes a title or stays open.

What the Austin result could change

  • As reported by formula1.com, Antonelli would win his first Drivers’ Championship with a race win at the US Grand Prix, should Russell and Hamilton meet their stated conditions.
  • If Russell finishes higher than ninth or Hamilton fifth or higher, this preview’s title conditions would not be met and the Championship would be decided at a later date.
  • Having won the last two races, Verstappen is clearly in the mix to win the US Grand Prix, and therefore formula1.com’s title conditions would require Antonelli to win the race, with both Russell and Hamilton finishing outside of the aforementioned positions.

The championship moves to race weekend

formula1.com places the U.S. Grand Prix on 23-25 October, with the race happening on the 25th. For Antonelli, the race means an opportunity to build on his lead and win the title, if he can win and if both of his title rivals fail to finish. The next race on the calendar for Antonelli is the Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas.
