Rybakina Tokyo ranking milestone

Elena Rybakina beat Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in Tokyo on 29 October to secure the 2026 WTA year-end top ranking, the WTA reports. The result sends Rybakina into the Toray Pan Pacific Open quarter-finals and settles the season-ending ranking race for the first time in her career.

Rybakina beats Putintseva without losing serve

The WTA's 29 October match report says Rybakina completed the second-round win in 70 minutes. The top seed did not lose serve and saved the only break point she faced in the final game. Her sixth ace closed the match. The straight-sets result also extended her winning streak after last week's Ningbo title.

Rybakina described the challenge of Putintseva's changes of pace in her on-court interview. “I was ready for longer rallies,” Rybakina said in her on-court interview, as quoted by the WTA. She also credited staying aggressive and focused, and said the conditions under the closed roof suited her. That account helps explain how she handled a compatriot who had beaten her in their first two meetings.

The WTA reports that Rybakina now leads their head-to-head by three wins to two. She also beat Putintseva in Miami earlier this season. This Tokyo contest was the more consequential result for the year-end table: it clinched a ranking outcome as well as a place in the next round.

How the year-end ranking was decided

SportsRivo compared the WTA's 26 October rankings preview with its 29 October match report. The earlier article said Rybakina was one victory away from securing the year-end top spot and had a first-round bye in Tokyo. The subsequent win over Putintseva supplied that victory. Rybakina had already risen to the weekly world top ranking after winning the US Open in September; the year-end position was a separate milestone.

The same WTA preview says Rybakina won the Ningbo title last week, her fourth trophy of the season. The current match report counts her Tokyo victory as a fifth consecutive match win. Her run continues in Japan, but the season-ending ranking is no longer dependent on what happens in the rest of the tournament.

What the Tokyo result changes

  • Rybakina holds the WTA year-end top ranking for the first time, the WTA confirmed on 29 October. Her Tokyo win removed the remaining one-win condition identified in its 26 October preview.
  • Rybakina advances to the Tokyo quarter-finals after the second-round victory; Putintseva's singles run ends at that stage.
  • Rybakina's winning streak reaches five matches following her Ningbo title, according to the WTA's 29 October report. The streak remains active as she moves into the next round.

Fernandez awaits in the quarter-finals

The WTA's 29 October report confirms that Rybakina will next face Leylah Fernandez in a rematch of the Ningbo final. Fernandez reached the Tokyo quarter-finals by beating Elise Mertens. The WTA gives Rybakina a lead of four wins to two in their head-to-head, including a win in their most recent final. That match remains scheduled; the year-end ranking is already secured.
