Early Life, Youth Career & Family Background
Richards started his football journey at Phoenix Football Academy in Jamaica at the age of eleven and stayed there until he signed with Chelsea. Alongside the academy, he played for the Kingston College school team and also trained with the football academy at Brooke House College in Leicestershire, England. Strong performances on youth tours across Europe drew attention from English clubs and eventually led to a trial with Newcastle United in February 2023.
Sport runs in the family. His grandmother was from England and competed internationally for her country. One of his uncles played basketball in the NBA, while another, O’Neil, represented Jamaica in international cricket.
Richards made his debut for Jamaica on 12 March 2023, aged seventeen years and four months. The same month, he reportedly signed a pre-contract agreement with Chelsea, and on 24 June the club confirmed he would join them after turning eighteen.
Four days later, on 28 June, he scored his first goal for Jamaica in a 4–1 win over Trinidad and Tobago at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The strike rounded off the scoring and made him the youngest player ever to score for Jamaica at the tournament.
Chelsea completed the transfer on 12 January 2024, two months after Richards turned eighteen. He began training daily at the club’s Cobham complex in Surrey, a big step up from school football in Jamaica in terms of physical demands, tactics and the pace of the English youth game.
On 8 February 2024, less than a month after the move, he made his debut for Chelsea’s under-18s in the FA Youth Cup.
In January 2025, Chelsea sent Richards on loan to AFC Wimbledon, giving the striker his first experience of English league football. He became part of the first-team matchday squads in League Two while continuing to represent Jamaica in the 2024–25 CONCACAF Nations League.
