South Africa named Gerald Coetzee in their XI for the 3rd Test against Australia at Newlands, the ICC reported on 26 October 2026. The fast bowler replaces injured Anrich Nortje with the series level ahead of its Cape Town decider.
Coetzee returns to the Test attack
Coetzee last played a Test against Sri Lanka in November 2024, according to the ICC's 26 October profile. The ICC credits him with 14 wickets across his previous Test appearances. His return brings a bowler with international white-ball experience back into South Africa's longer-format side for a match that can decide the series. The named XI also includes Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, with Simon Harmer retained as its specialist spinner.
Nortje had been ruled out after suffering a mild groin injury while bowling in the preceding Test at Gqeberha. The ICC reported that scans confirmed the injury. Monday's announced XI names Coetzee in Nortje's place; Cricket Australia says this is South Africa's only change from the side that won at Gqeberha. Coetzee had travelled with the squad but had not played a Test in the intervening period.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma told reporters before the match: “Gerald does have an extra bit of pace.” Cricket Australia quoted the comment in its 26 October report. Bavuma said Coetzee had been working with the squad despite his long absence from Tests. Cricket Australia also reports that fellow seamers Corbin Bosch and Dane Paterson were considered for the place.
From squad member to named starter
The ICC's earlier squad bulletin listed Coetzee among South Africa's available players after Nortje's injury, without confirming who would take his place in the XI. SportsRivo compared that bulletin with the later team announcement: Coetzee was already in the squad, but his starting place was confirmed only in Monday's report. The team selection fills South Africa's vacant fast-bowling place for Cape Town after the injury.
Australia won the opening Test in Durban before South Africa levelled the series with an innings victory at Gqeberha, according to the ICC's 26 October recap. The Cape Town match will settle the series if either side wins. The ICC also says a South Africa victory would move the hosts above Australia in both the World Test Championship standings and the Test team rankings. That ranking change depends on the result.
What the selection changes
- Coetzee takes Nortje's place in a pace attack that also includes Rabada and Jansen. Bavuma told Cricket Australia that Coetzee can perform the fast-bowling enforcer role when conditions become less helpful.
- Harmer remains the selected specialist spinner, while Keshav Maharaj stays outside the XI, Cricket Australia reports. South Africa therefore retain the spin option used in their Gqeberha victory.
- The decider carries a series result and a possible change at the top of the rankings. The ICC's projection of South Africa taking the lead applies if Bavuma's side wins.
Cape Town fixture
The ICC schedules the 3rd Test for 27–31 October at Newlands in Cape Town. South Africa have named their side for that contest, with Coetzee included in the starting XI.
