Rebecca Henderson and Masatora Kawano recorded 3:14:52 and 2:55:14 in Takahata on 25 October, according to World Athletics. The federation marks both marathon race walk performances as subject to ratification.
Kawano breaks clear as Henderson walks alone
Kawano made his move after a group had stayed together deep into the men's race. The World Athletics report dated 25 October says he accelerated at 36km, leaving Kazuya Iwai as the only athlete able to chase. Iwai was already behind as the remaining contenders lost contact. The rain and repeated rise and fall of the Takahata course added to the demands on the field.
World Athletics lists Iwai second in 2:55:55 and Kazuki Takahashi third in 2:56:45 in its 25 October account. The official results table separately confirms their finishing order. Kawano's performance came on his debut at this race walk distance, in the town where he had previously set a world mark over another distance.
Henderson also made her marathon race walk debut, but her race followed a different pattern. World Athletics' 25 October report says she led on her own from the start, passing the 20.195km checkpoint in 1:33:39. Her advantage over Ayane Yanai had grown beyond six minutes by that stage and continued to widen. Yanai nevertheless finished with a Japanese record, according to the same race report.
A new benchmark and an improved mark
Henderson's performance bettered the previous women's mark held by Sofia Fiorini, who set it at the European Championships in Birmingham in August. Kawano posted the inaugural men's world record performance for the marathon race walk, World Athletics reports. The performances have different record contexts: one improves an existing mark, while the other would establish the first men's benchmark if ratified.
SportsRivo checked the separate World Athletics results table against its race report: Kazuya Iwai and Ayane Yanai are listed as the men's and women's runners-up respectively. The table also places an asterisk beside both winners' world record annotations, matching the report's ratification caveat. That cross-check confirms the placing and the current status of the performances without treating either mark as finally approved.
What the Takahata results change
- Henderson's women's record performance improves on Fiorini's earlier mark, subject to ratification by World Athletics. The comparison comes from the federation's 25 October report.
- Kawano becomes the first men's marathon race walk world record claimant, while Iwai and Takahashi fill the remaining podium places in the official World Athletics results. The record remains provisional.
- World Athletics says the leading men's finishers were under the performance standard for eligibility at the next world championships in Beijing. Yanai's runner-up performance also brought her a Japanese record, according to its race report.
Records await ratification
World Athletics says the two world record marks are subject to its usual ratification procedure. Until that process is complete, the performances should be described as provisional records.
