Diana Shnaider beat Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the Tokyo final on 1 November, the WTA reports. Shnaider claimed her first singles title of the season after resisting a sharp fightback.

Shnaider survives a change in momentum

Shnaider took the opening set and moved well ahead in the second. Fernandez then won seven of the next eight games and forced a decider, according to the WTA's final report. The change turned what had looked like a routine finish into a test of Shnaider's response under pressure.

Fernandez held at the start of the final set and created three break chances on Shnaider's serve. Shnaider saved each one, broke serve later in the set and won the final three games. The WTA records the match as lasting two hours and eighteen minutes.

The WTA's 1 November final report identifies Shnaider as the No. 3 seed. At the on-court presentation, Shnaider thanked her coach for their first title together this season. Shnaider described it as “a great achievement and a great finish to the season” in the same report.

The route through Tokyo

Shnaider had reached the final by beating Mia Pohankova, while Fernandez had defeated Kamilla Rakhimova. The WTA's semi-final report said Shnaider had been one point from a deciding set against Pohankova before recovering in the tie-break.

SportsRivo compared the WTA's semi-final report with its final account: Shnaider needed a late recovery to reach the title match, then stopped Fernandez's comeback to win it. An earlier SportsRivo report covered Shnaider's quarter-final meeting with Alexandra Eala. The sequence traces her progress through separate tests across the Tokyo run.

What the Tokyo title changes

  • Shnaider collected her first singles title of the season and the sixth of her career, the WTA reports.
  • The victory extended her run of consecutive final wins since her first championship-match defeat, according to the WTA.
  • Fernandez finished runner-up in Tokyo after also reaching the Ningbo final the previous week, the WTA reports.
