Namibia beat Ireland by five wickets in Windhoek on 1 November to take the five-match ODI series 3-2, according to the ICC's 2 November report. The result gave Namibia their first bilateral ODI series victory over a Full Member.
Smit's burst sets up Namibia's chase
Cricket Ireland's 1 November match summary lists Ireland at 129 all out and Namibia at 131-5 after 21.2 overs. The finish left Namibia with wickets in hand, matching the ICC's description of a five-wicket win.
Ireland were 84-3 when JJ Smit took three wickets in four balls during the 23rd over, Cricket Ireland reported on 1 November. The sudden fall to 84-6 left Ireland's lower order to recover, and Namibia's chase then finished with wickets in hand.
The ICC named Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus Player of the Series. Its report says Namibia's pace bowlers shared seven wickets in the decider, placing Smit's middle-order burst within a broader bowling effort.
Ireland skipper Lorcan Tucker told the ICC: “Obviously, it was a disappointing day for us.” Cricket Ireland's separate account says Tucker identified top-order batting and bowling through the middle of the innings as areas his side needed to sharpen before its next qualifying campaign.
A series win, with different World Cup routes
The ICC describes this as Namibia's first bilateral ODI series success against a Full Member. The teams had each won twice before the Windhoek decider, so Namibia's final-match chase settled the series as well as the individual result.
SportsRivo checked Cricket Ireland's qualifier schedule against the ICC's series report: Ireland already has a World Cup Qualifier place, while the ICC says Namibia will likely need to earn its place through a Qualifier Play-off. The bilateral victory does not itself settle Namibia's tournament qualification.
What follows from the result
- Namibia leave the series with a first bilateral ODI success against a Full Member, as the ICC confirms.
- Ireland's attention turns towards the World Cup Qualifier after a defeat in conditions it will revisit, according to Cricket Ireland.
- Namibia's route remains open: the ICC says a Qualifier Play-off is still the likely path to a Qualifier berth.
Ireland's next qualifying event
Cricket Ireland schedules the World Cup Qualifier in South Africa and Namibia from 26 February to 21 March 2027. The tournament is a future fixture, separate from the completed Windhoek ODI series.
