Australia name fresh faces for England white-ball series

Australia England cricket squads

Cricket Australia named its England white-ball squads on 2 November, resting Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood after the South Africa Tests. Mitchell Marsh captains both groups as Australia brings younger players into the home series.

New players join as senior quicks rest

Cricket Australia's ODI list includes Mahli Beardman, Oliver Peake, Jack Edwards and Liam Scott. The T20I selection also contains Beardman and Edwards, alongside Nikhil Chaudhary and Joel Davies. Wicketkeepers Lachlan Shaw and Sam Harper are the two uncapped players in that shorter-format group, the board reports.

Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood are being rested after the Test series in South Africa, with further Tests scheduled against New Zealand and India. That leaves the England white-ball matches to a different pace group. Nathan Ellis appears in the T20I squad but is missing from the ODI group while recovering from a side strain, according to the ICC's account of the announcement.

Cricket Australia selection panel chair George Bailey said: “Mahli Beardman's recent performances for Australia A were impressive”. Bailey also pointed to the bowler's return across both formats. Beardman and Peake join a side that retains established ODI batters and wicketkeepers while changing its personnel for the later T20Is.

How the ODI and T20I groups differ

SportsRivo compared Cricket Australia's two published squad lists. Beardman and Edwards appear in both formats, while Peake and Scott are named for ODIs only. Chaudhary, Davies, Shaw and Harper appear in the T20I list but not the ODI list. The comparison shows that the fresh selections are divided across the tour, rather than forming a single unchanged squad.

Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly are in the ODI squad and absent from the T20I list. Cricket Australia explicitly says that group will miss the T20I leg. SportsRivo previously covered Starc's Cape Town spell before this new selection announcement.

What the selection means

  • Beardman and Edwards can be considered for both white-ball formats, according to Cricket Australia's squad lists.
  • Shaw and Harper are uncapped options in the T20I squad; neither is listed for the ODIs.
  • Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood sit out the England white-ball series as Australia prepares for its next Test assignments.

England tour begins in Perth

Cricket Australia's schedule sets the opening ODI in Perth for 13 November. The T20I leg follows after the one-day matches, when Australia's selected group changes.
