Eala Shnaider Tokyo rematch

Alexandra Eala recovered from a set down to beat Talia Gibson 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in Tokyo on 28 October, the WTA reports. The result sets a quarter-final meeting with Diana Shnaider, who also survived a three-set match that day.

Eala and Shnaider advance through three-set matches

The WTA's 28 October account says Eala took 12 of the last 14 games after Gibson won the opener. Gibson had served for that set, but Eala's returns and movement changed the match. Eala won the final nine games in succession and closed it on her second match point with a service winner.

Shnaider's route was less one-sided. The WTA's 28 October report records a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win against qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich in two hours and 31 minutes. Sasnovich struck 29 winners, but the report also lists 62 unforced errors; Shnaider recovered control in the deciding set.

Both victories were completed before the WTA named the quarter-final pairing. Eala's recovery came against a player who had reached the Singapore final, while Shnaider beat a qualifier who had already won matches in Tokyo. Those paths bring the two left-handers together again after different second-round tests.

Ningbo meeting gives the Tokyo rematch context

The rematch follows Shnaider's Ningbo win. In its 22 October report, the WTA recorded a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Eala in their first professional meeting. Diana Shnaider, then the No. 6 seed, told the WTA after that match: "You expect the slice serve into the body, definitely a little more variation and a different type of ball strike."

SportsRivo checked the WTA's 26 October first-round account against its 28 October report. The earlier report recorded Eala's win over Mika Stojsavljevic and identified Gibson as her next opponent. The later account confirms Eala beat Gibson from a set down. Eala's Tokyo route therefore runs through those two opponents before the Shnaider rematch.

What the quarter-final changes

  • Eala reached the last eight for the first time since her Washington title in August, according to the WTA's 28 October report. The Tokyo win follows a slower start to her Asian Swing.
  • Shnaider reached her eighth quarter-final of 2026 and third consecutive Asian Swing quarter-final, the WTA says in its 28 October account. Her sequence includes Wuhan, Ningbo and Tokyo.
  • The match gives Eala a chance to level their professional head-to-head after Shnaider's Ningbo win. The Tokyo quarter-final will decide which of them advances to the semi-finals.

Eala and Shnaider meet next in Tokyo

The WTA's 28 October report confirms Eala against Shnaider as the next Tokyo quarter-final. The official tournament listing identifies the competition as a WTA 500 event on outdoor hard courts and gives 1 November as its final day.
