Everton beat Newcastle through Barry’s second-half goal

Everton Barry Newcastle victory

Everton beat Newcastle 1–0 at St James' Park on 2 November, the Premier League's dated report confirms. Thierno Barry finished after Tyrique George's shot escaped Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, according to Everton's match report.

Barry converts after George's shot gets through

Everton's account says James Garner sent George into the left channel shortly after half-time. George's low effort passed through Horníček's hands and Barry was close to goal for the finish. The visitors had gone into the interval without scoring despite a number of openings.

Newcastle's own report also attributes the goal to George's shot getting beneath Horníček. It says Everton then threatened again: Horníček pushed away a Jarrad Branthwaite header and later saved from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Newcastle could not convert its chances at the other end. Everton's Player of the match Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall told Seamus Coleman in a club interview, “We scored a nice goal and the most important thing is a clean sheet.”

Everton describe Anthony Elanga getting a shot under Jordan Pickford after Yoane Wissa headed the ball across goal. The ball travelled along the line before James Tarkowski cleared it. In the closing stages, Pickford stopped Wissa from close range with his legs.

Newcastle's report adds that Jacob Ramsey was sent off in stoppage time after two bookings. His late dismissal left the hosts with even less time to find an equaliser.

The clubs agree on Newcastle's missed reply

SportsRivo compared the clubs' descriptions of Elanga's chance. Everton says the ball rolled along the line before Tarkowski cleared; Newcastle says Elanga could not force it home. Both accounts describe a missed opportunity to level, and neither records a Newcastle goal from the move.

Everton had beaten the same opponent in the Carabao Cup a few days earlier, according to the club's report. For the league rematch, Jarrad Branthwaite returned after a concussion protocol and Harrison Armstrong started in midfield ahead of Hayden Hackney. The change of competition made this result a separate league development.

What the result changes

  • Everton climbed to seventh in the Premier League table, as the league's dated report states.
  • Newcastle missed a chance to reach the top half of the table, according to the club's match report.
  • Everton kept a clean sheet after Pickford's late stop and Tarkowski's goal-line clearance, as both club reports describe.

Everton's next league match

The Premier League's fixture list puts Everton at home to Coventry City on Friday 6 November. That scheduled match follows the two wins over Newcastle in different competitions.
