Como beat Lens 9–1 on 4 November, equalling the Champions League's largest victory margin and setting its biggest away win, according to UEFA's dated record list. It was the Italian club's first European away victory, Como's match report says.
Douvikas leads Como's nine-goal surge
Tasos Douvikas opened the scoring and added another before Nico Paz struck, giving Como a commanding lead before the interval. Como's match report places Douvikas's goals at seven and thirty-two minutes, with Paz scoring shortly before half-time. UEFA's 4 November round-up identifies Lucas Da Cunha and Marc-Oliver Kempf as the next scorers.
Douvikas then completed his hat-trick, followed by Mattia Liberali. Lens's Ruben Aguilar pulled one back, but Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli closed the scoring, UEFA's round-up says. UEFA also named Douvikas Player of the Match and listed him as the competition's six-goal leading scorer after this game.
Como's report says Papaccioli came through the club's academy, made his European debut at Lens and scored in stoppage time. That late goal completed a night on which six players besides Douvikas found the net, according to UEFA's record page. Como's account also identifies first Champions League goals for Kempf and Liberali, adding to the spread of scorers.
How the record margin compares
UEFA's 4 November record page puts the 9–1 result alongside Liverpool's 8–0 victory over Beşiktaş and Real Madrid's 8–0 over Malmö. All share an eight-goal winning margin, but Como alone achieved it away from home. UEFA says Bayern München previously reached nine goals in a Champions League game against GNK Dinamo without matching an eight-goal margin.
SportsRivo cross-checked UEFA's team fixture list with Como's club report. Como beat Leipzig and Manchester United at home and lost at Feyenoord before travelling to Lens; the club identifies the Lens result as its first European away win. Reuters quoted Como captain Lucas Da Cunha after the match: “It's a crazy night and a crazy result, but we can't get ahead of ourselves.” UEFA's schedule places AEK Athens and Real Betis before later meetings with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.
What the result changes
- UEFA's 4 November round-up places Como fourth at the league-phase midpoint after the record victory.
- Douvikas tops UEFA's current Champions League scoring list with six goals following his Lens hat-trick.
- Lens have lost to Sporting CP, Club Brugge and Como in succession, UEFA's team results show.
The next European fixtures
UEFA's fixture list schedules Como at home to AEK Athens and Lens away to Leipzig on 24 November. Como's remaining league-phase programme also includes Real Betis, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, according to the same list. The AEK match is the club's next scheduled European test after Lens.
