Cole Caufield overtime record

Cole Caufield became the fastest NHL player to score 15 career overtime goals, reaching the mark in 384 games as Montreal beat Utah 5–4 at Bell Centre on Thursday, according to the NHL's 6 November report. His winner came 30 seconds into overtime after the Canadiens had trailed late.

Caufield finishes Montreal's comeback

The NHL's 6 November account says Caufield faked a slap shot on a two-on-one and lifted a wrist shot over Sebastian Cossa's right shoulder. Connor McDavid had needed 559 games to reach the same career overtime-goal total. The comparison concerns games played to that milestone, rather than the number of overtime appearances.

The NHL's 6 November report says Montreal trailed 4–3 after Nick Schmaltz scored on a third-period power play. Adam Engstrom equalised with his first NHL goal, leaving 5:06 on the clock. Caufield's goal gave the Canadiens their first lead of the night. Logan Cooley had scored a hat trick for Utah, while the returning Nick Suzuki contributed a goal and two assists for Montreal.

Montreal coach Martin St. Louis said he liked the reaction to the earlier Winnipeg loss: “I loved the players’ response to that game.” His assessment followed another finish in which Montreal had to recover from deficits. Engstrom's equaliser came from a wrist shot through traffic and gave the Canadiens a chance to settle the game in overtime.

SportsRivo checked the Canadiens' scoring log against the league's match account. The club's 6 November report records Engstrom's equaliser at 14:54 of the third period and Caufield's winner at 00:30 of overtime. Those entries confirm the order and timing of the comeback; the league report separately supplies the career-games record.

A response to Winnipeg's late rally

The NHL's 6 November recap describes Montreal's previous game as a 5–4 overtime defeat by Winnipeg after the Canadiens led 4–0 with 2:39 left in regulation. Montreal then fell behind Utah twice before forcing another extra period. Suzuki returned after missing six games with an upper-body injury and helped set up Caufield's winner.

SportsRivo's report on Montreal's Heritage Classic win over Winnipeg covers a separate meeting on 25 October. The later loss to Winnipeg and the win against Utah form the immediate sequence behind this comeback. The NHL's 6 November account also says Cooley reached five career hat tricks in 228 games, the quickest among active players ahead of Alex Ovechkin's 230.

What the result changes

  • The NHL's 6 November report puts Montreal at 10–3–3 after the win, with six victories in its past seven games.
  • Utah left with an overtime loss despite Cooley's hat trick; the NHL's 6 November report lists the Mammoth at 10–6–1.
  • Engstrom's first NHL goal erased Utah's late lead, allowing Caufield's record-setting overtime winner to decide the match.

Montreal head to Toronto

The Canadiens' 6 November club recap lists a trip to face the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday. It gives a 7:00 p.m. ET start. That fixture remains scheduled; the Utah result is complete.
