Proxima Dea won the 2026 Crown Oaks at Flemington on 5 November, completing an unbeaten six-race start, according to Victoria Racing Club. The victory also gave jockey Zac Lloyd his first top-level win in Melbourne.
Proxima Dea overcomes a wide trip
Victoria Racing Club's 5 November account says Lloyd broke quickly from the second-widest barrier but raced three-wide for much of the contest. Proxima Dea moved ahead early in Flemington's straight and extended her lead over the closing stages. The club describes a decisive finish despite the extra ground she covered.
The VRC result puts Shameful Impulse second, one and three-quarter lengths behind the winner. De Armas was third after Shameful Impulse caught her at the line. The result completed a rapid rise for Proxima Dea, who had already beaten male rivals in the Spring Champion Stakes before travelling to Flemington.
David Payne trained the winner and had kept the Oaks as her target. In the VRC's post-race account, Payne said Proxima Dea was bred to stay and had followed his plan through her first preparation. The filly is by Tarzino out of Invisible Coin and is a sister to Queensland Oaks winner Gypsy Goddess, the club reports.
How unusual was the starting gate?
SportsRivo checked the VRC race account against Racing.com's 5 November historical note. The VRC describes a second-widest starting position in a field of 16; Racing.com identifies gate 15 and says no Oaks winner had started from that gate or wider since Denise's Joy in 1975. The wide draw makes Lloyd's early positioning and the filly's sustained finish central to this result.
Proxima Dea's campaign had begun with a win at Randwick, followed by success at Gosford and Rosehill. A Gloaming Stakes victory preceded the Spring Champion Stakes, according to the VRC's account. Flemington added another major distance test to that sequence.
What the Crown Oaks result changes
- Proxima Dea remains unbeaten and adds the Crown Oaks to her Spring Champion Stakes win in the same first campaign.
- Lloyd records his first top-level victory in Melbourne, according to Victoria Racing Club's result report.
- Shameful Impulse takes the runner-up place ahead of De Armas after finishing strongly in the Flemington straight.
Payne plans a break for Proxima Dea
David Payne, Proxima Dea's trainer, said after the race that “she'll go for a holiday now and she deserves it.” Racing.com reports that a later Melbourne Cup attempt is a possibility, while Payne has committed only to a spell for the filly after this campaign.
