Everton beat Coventry City 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on 6 November, according to Everton FC's match report published that night. Thierno Barry scored twice after Coventry took the lead, then supplied the pass that completed Everton's comeback.
Barry turns Coventry's lead into an Everton win
Coventry had threatened before the interval. Everton FC's account describes Jordan Pickford saving a shot from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto with his legs, while Jack Rudoni drove narrowly wide. Soon after the restart, Yann Gboho exchanged passes with Sakamoto and finished from close range. Everton had created chances of their own, but now had to respond to an away goal.
Barry supplied that response from two different deliveries. Vitalii Mykolenko crossed from the left for the striker to head in the equaliser. Tyrique George then sent the ball towards the far post, where Barry forced it over the line. Everton FC describes both goals as coming soon after Gboho's opener, changing a game Coventry had briefly controlled.
The final goal showed another part of Barry's contribution. He collected the ball inside Coventry's half, turned and played Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall into the left channel. Dewsbury-Hall beat Carl Rushworth at the near post to settle the match. Everton striker Barry told the club afterwards: “I’m in good form at the moment.” He also said he wanted to keep scoring, a stated aim after his decisive role in this win.
Newcastle win gives Barry's double context
The previous SportsRivo report on Everton at Newcastle described Barry finishing a loose ball after George's shot passed through the goalkeeper's hands. That was a separate Premier League win earlier in the week, with Everton relying on one close-range finish and then defending the lead.
SportsRivo compared Everton's Newcastle and Coventry match reports: Barry tapped in after George's shot at St James' Park, then scored from Mykolenko's cross and George's far-post delivery against Coventry. George was involved in both victories, but the Coventry report also records Barry creating Dewsbury-Hall's goal. The comparison shows how his contribution widened from finishing one move to shaping several decisive attacks.
What the result changes
- Everton FC's report says the victory put the club fifth in the Premier League ahead of the weekend's other matches. The position gives Moyes's side a stronger standing going into the international break, although later results can change the table.
- Everton FC's separate reaction piece says Barry reached ten goals in all competitions this season with his Coventry brace. His pass for Dewsbury-Hall also made him directly involved in every Everton goal in the match.
- Everton FC says David Moyes drew level with Harry Catterick's club mark for matches in charge. The landmark came with a comeback victory and a third successive win, rather than simply an appearance on the touchline.
Brentford awaits after the break
The Premier League have announced that Everton will play Brentford on Monday 23 November. Everton will travel to Brentford after the international break, following their win against Coventry; the league position shown by the club was recorded before the rest of that weekend's games were played.
