The 2027 Giro d’Italia will run from Trieste on 8 May to Rome on 30 May over 3,418.9 kilometres, according to the organiser’s 3 November route release. Its Alpine closing week includes the Gavia, two climbs of the Mortirolo and a finish on Monte Zoncolan.
The route builds towards the Alps
Giro d’Italia’s 3 November announcement sets out a mixed opening week. The race begins with a circuit of Trieste that briefly crosses into Slovenia. The following day is entirely on Slovenian roads between Ljubljana and Koper. A later summit finish at Sarnano-Sassotetto offers the first major test for riders targeting the overall classification.
Luca Guercilena, the organiser’s Cycling Director, said the Filottrano-to-Sassotetto stage would provide “the first indications of the race” because it is the first uphill finish. Giro d’Italia’s 3 November release gives that stage 3,300 metres of climbing in 139 kilometres. His comment describes what the route may reveal; it does not predict who will lead after it.
The Giro d’Italia route table, checked by SportsRivo against the 3 November release, confirms a climbing time trial from Sulmona to Campo di Giove before a longer, flatter Monza-to-Milano time trial. The table gives the respective distances as 19.6 and 37.3 kilometres. That comparison matters for overall contenders: the first test adds a sustained ascent, while the later one rewards speed on a largely flat course.
Familiar climbs return late in the race
Giro d’Italia’s 3 November account puts the Sondrio-to-Aprica Alpine stage after the second rest day. Its route crosses the Mortirolo twice and the Gavia before finishing in Aprica. The official route table calls it the most demanding day on paper, with approximately 5,700 metres of elevation gain. Those climbs arrive when the general classification will have already been shaped by the earlier summit finishes and both time trials.
Monte Zoncolan is scheduled for the penultimate stage, starting in Pordenone. Giro d’Italia’s 3 November release says the race last finished there in 2021, when Lorenzo Fortunato won from the Sutrio side. Next year’s route approaches from Ovaro, the side used for Chris Froome’s 2018 victory. The comparison describes the road selected by the organiser, without assuming which riders will contest the stage.
What the course changes for the field
- Overall contenders face an uphill finish in the opening week, according to the Giro d’Italia’s 3 November route release, before the hardest Alpine stage arrives late in the race.
- Time-trial specialists have a flat Monza-to-Milano course, while the earlier Sulmona test climbs towards its finish, as the official route table shows.
- Climbers have a final chance to alter the standings on the Ovaro approach to Monte Zoncolan before the concluding Rome stage, according to the organiser’s route announcement.
Trieste starts the scheduled race
Giro d’Italia’s 2027 route table schedules the opening Trieste stage for 8 May and the final Rome stage for 30 May. The course is announced, but these are future races; the route alone cannot establish a start list or results.
